It’s fine as a resource, but I don’t think it makes “all the sense in the world” to have it ready on day one. We never used to have guides like these from day one, and had lots of fun figuring things out. So I disagree – these kind of guides on day one should be discouraged and not commended. Not just one of the best games this year, but one of the best playstation titles. Amazing family game as well that shows off all of the PS5 abilities.

Not sure I’ll use it, unless I get really stuck trying to find something, but still appreciated. goal 123 has been one of the few websites that’s given this game the coverage it deserves. I was suprised how easily some of the collectibles are to miss. The game is very streamline I would have thought no way I am missing this stuff lol. In addition to new levels, Sony as part of its June State of Play announced a new limited-edition Astro Bot DualSense controller, one with a slightly different expression from a previous Astro Bot controller.

There are shocking deep cuts here from every corner of PlayStation’s history, including its indie partners. If you have a seminal PS1 game in your mind or a semi-obscure PS2 horror game, there’s a good chance it’s represented here. Aside from a lack of Final Fantasy representation, Astro Bot pays its respects to several generations of formative games. A handful of excellent stages even go one step further by paying tribute to some key games themselves — expect gaming history nerds to go positively feral over them.

And while you don’t need a long history with Sony systems to enjoy it, it is especially a delight for those with a piece of PlayStation in their heart as a treasure trove full of playable nostalgia awaits. Many of the PlayStation characters appear as short, charming cameos, but a handful play fully-fledged supporting roles. I won’t spoil who gets the star treatment here, aside from one – the previously revealed Kratos. His introduction sees you wield his ice-infused Leviathan axe and take on the role of the exiled Spartan himself in a thrilling change of pace, the frosty blade boomeranging around the level. It’s here where Astro Bot becomes truly magical, elegantly blending nostalgia with new ideas. Such moments essentially let you play these iconic games in miniature, lending Astro their powers and letting him loose in a level entirely built around familiar stories and settings, soundtracked by remixes of heroic themes.

It may be 2024’s most immersive game, and it achieves that without a line of dialogue. Instead, each level tells a story, clear as day, about where you ought to go next and what you should do there. Astro Bot is one of the year’s biggest and best titles and it’s easy to see why. There’s a lot to do, it’s visually stunning and it’s a welcoming platformer. You can jump onto the title even if you haven’t played Astro’s Playroom or a PlayStation game in general.

However, this time, we’re getting a full-length game (with no microtransactions) that’s much bigger than Astro’s previous adventures. The game includes hidden levels that can pose a challenge even for veteran platformers, which makes it even more appealing in my eyes. For most of the gameplay, however, the difficulty is more balanced and generally easy, but this doesn’t detract from the almost childlike joy of completing each level. There’s plenty to do in the galaxies haunted by the green alien. I can’t wait to buy my own copy and work toward earning all the achievements in this charming game.

But despite being a museum to Sony’s past, Astro Bot is more concerned with looking forward, not backwards. I expected it to be a pretty fun little cartoon romp where the main draw would be pointing at the screen and going “Look! It’s Nathan Drake!”. What I got was one of the greatest platformers I have ever played, in terms of creativity, consistency, and cleverness, that just so happens to have a bunch of PlayStation mascots inside it. There are 91 stages in Astro Bot, making this one of Team Asobi’s biggest and most ambitious games to date. Between them, they boast well over 460 collectibles, including 120 Puzzle Pieces, 10 Lost Galaxy Warps, and 332 stranded Bots that are just waiting to be rescued. They’re usually just tied up or waving for help or, in the case of Solid Snake, just hanging impotently from a tree. The characters make for fun rewards for completing a level, or finding a secret, but as a tribute to the games they originate from they’re almost entirely useless. Although half of the bots you’re rescuing look identical to Astro, just without the cape, the other 150 are all based on characters from other games. Or rather they’re normal bots cosplaying as characters from other games. These cameos are far more extensive than we expected and include not just deep cuts from Sony’s back catalogue but references to games from Activision, Konami, Embracer Group, Atlus, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and others.

Knocking a Rescued Bot out of a Bot Wall will unlock the Wall Buster trophy in Astro Bot. At the Crash Site, you can call on your Rescued Bots to help unlock new areas or find new Bots and Puzzle Pieces. Sometimes the Rescued Bots will stack on top of each other to transform into a Bot Wall that you can walk up. Press down on the D-Pad to emote while standing in front of Crash Bandicoot. Give Astro Bot a chance to complete a full dance with Crash Bandicoot to collect the Let’s Twist Again trophy.
